Rain Barrel Success!

Making Every Drop Count

After receiving the National Conservation Foundation $10,000 Project Award Grant in February, our RISE Up to Reduce Your Storm Water - Communities Building Rain Barrels program has been a huge success! The grant, awarded to only one conservation district in the nation, enabled our district to assemble 200 rain barrels locally with the help of the Rehabilitation & Industrial Services Enterprise (RISE) Inc., a local non-profit organization that assists individuals with mental and physical disabilities reach their fullest potential,

The program’s success can be credited in large part to RISE Inc for their excellent work in assembling the 200 barrels in a month. Their quick assembly allowed our district to begin distributing the barrels ahead of schedule.

Another part of the program’s success has been the enthusiastic participation of Steuben County residents, who have supported both RISE Inc. and our district by purchasing the barrels. In just a few months all 200 barrels have been spoken for, and we have begun to place interested residents on a waiting list for next year. Our goal is to continue producing 30 to 40 rain barrels a year into the future.

We would like to thank our partners: RISE Inc, Steuben County Lakes Council, City of Angola Waste Water Treatment Plant, City of Angola/Trine University MS4, and Tractor Supply for helping make our program a success. We would also like to thank the residents of Steuben County for expressing their interest and demand for our program.

Currently we are working with RISE Inc and Northeast Indiana Habitat for Humanity for their "Rain on Angola, Turning Rain Barrels into Works of Art" fundraiser event scheduled for Thursday September 1, 2011. Local businesses are encouraged to sponsor 1 of 16 available rain barrels and use your creativity to turn the barrel into a work of art. All 16 barrels will be put on display around the downtown Angola monument for a month, before being auctioned off. Proceeds will benefit RISE Inc, and Northeast Indiana Habitat for Humanity.
